On Wednesday, the St. Joe’s Cross Country team competed at WECSSAA, which took place at Malden Park. The Lasers were among many students from schools across Windsor-Essex who were participating in the first race on the road to OFSAA. The Lasers faced tough competition and challenging courses, but ran solid races that led to the qualification of the Midget Girls, Junior Boys, Senior Girls and Senior Boys to SWOSSAA. “I was super happy with the results and the fact that all four of the teams that we had going in qualified, which is a pretty big deal,” said coach, Mr. Strong.
“Since I’ve been coaching, this year presents the most teams that have qualified, the biggest team that we’ve had, and a lot of impressive single finishes too,” said Ms. Flynn, one of the coaches. Among these “impressive single finishes” was Nicole L. who placed an amazing second place in the senior girls 6k race, and Ezra F. who placed twelfth in the junior boys 5k race.
Throughout the day, the Lasers not only demonstrated the results of their hard work, but also showed great teamwork and sportsmanship. During their races, St. Joe’s students made sure to encourage teammates to keep running, and congratulated one another as they crossed the finish line. Those who had finished their own races, or who were waiting to run, could be found cheering on runners throughout the course, using shortcuts to pop up at various cheering spots.
Be sure to wish these Laser runners good luck as they compete at SWOSSAA next Wednesday!
