Are you interested in learning more about the LGBTQ+ community? Do you want to educate yourself on different sexualities, genders, and orientations? St Joseph’s Catholic High School has the perfect club for you. The St. Joe’s Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) meets every Wednesday, at lunch, in the chapel, and it is full of welcoming, accepting members.
The group was founded in May of 2017, by Christian Pacheco (a graduate of St. Joseph’s). Christian brought together a group of like-minded people with a common goal of making St. Joseph’s a more accepting, welcoming place for the LGBTQ+ community, and though Pacheco has long since graduated, the group remains and his dream lives on.
The GSA is dedicated to making St. Joe’s a more accepting place for the LGBTQ+ community, as well as educating as many people as they can about different orientations and how to be more respectful of them. They hold information meetings on the first Wednesday of every month, where they discuss different orientations and learn more about them.
Sabrina Sisco (photographer/sports correspondent for Laser News and proud member of the GSA) had this to say about the group: “Each time I go, I learn a little bit more about myself and the world around me. I enjoy the flow of questions, as well as being able to listen to other people and their stories.”
The group will be participating in fundraisers throughout the year, as well as working in the school community to help any students who are questioning their sexuality and/or gender.
For more information about the Gay-Straight Alliance, contact Sydney Barron (the group’s student leader) or Mrs. Owchar (the group’s teacher moderator), or head to the chapel at lunch on any Wednesday.
