Be Organized
Being organized is key when studying biology, especially when given a vast amount of material to read and learn. Using dividers and folders to classify the material or units is a great way to organize because it allows you to know exactly where all the information is for each unit, and makes studying much easier. Another way to organize is by making diagrams, study notes, word lists, and re-copying tables and charts so that it is easier memorize. Studies show that by re-writing material, it is better processed in the brain and is quicker to comprehend. By making study notes and word lists, key terms and concepts for the unit will be condensed to fewer pages and will be much easier to learn and read. These are just a few ways of how organization can be applied to study methods when learning biology.
Come To Class
Attendance is extremely important with all subjects in school, but missing a day in biology affects students tremendously, as there is a lot of information being taught and usually a great deal of notes to be written. It is vital that you come to class as much as possible, and to pay attention to your fullest ability when the teacher is explaining a concept. Sitting at the front is very helpful as it limits chances for distraction as you are very close to the teacher. If you miss a class, contact a classmate to copy the notes and have them explain the lesson to you, or visit the teacher on your free time. Showing up to biology is very important in order to grasp the material properly and succeed in being knowledgeable about the terms and concepts that are taught.
Read The Material
Some teachers may not teach directly from the textbook, but the material that you learn is the same. Reading about a concept before it is taught to you is very helpful as you can get a head start on your learning and go into the unit with some background knowledge instead of being a "blank slate". When reading your notes or the textbook, highlight the most important parts so that your learning isn't sidetracked and you can focus on the information that you are required to know, rather than sections that you won’t be tested on. Reading the material daily will allow you to stay focused on what you are learning and will keep your memory refreshed for each class.
Ask Questions
Biology can sometimes be difficult to grasp, so in times of misunderstanding or miscommunication, it is important to ask questions. Even if you don’t understand something very minor, asking questions to clarify will help you to fully understand the concept as it may assist you with future assessments. When studying, focus mainly on the topics that you don’t fully comprehend or that you have not fully memorized, and ask your teacher or a knowledgeable classmate to help enlighten you about the information that you are having trouble learning. Using internet videos is also a great way to aid in your understanding. Khan Academy has some great biology videos that can help teach you concepts and topics if you are having difficulties.
