After a joy-filled morning, the Lasers changed out of their formal attire in exchange for blue and yellow spirit wear. Students went all out with face paint, hand-made shirts, and of course, the wonderful hats and scarves made by the Life Skills students. Lasers then made their way to the WFCU Centre Arena where the Catholic Cup, a hockey game between Brennan and St. Joe’s, would take place as it has every year since its founding in 1984.

This year marked an especially important milestone in the annual match as the girls’ teams from Brennan and St. Joseph’s were allowed to play for the first time in the game’s history. The girls played a shorter game than the boys, but the players and coaches felt it was a good opportunity for the players, and a great addition to the afternoon’s activities. “It was really cool to play in the first ever “girls” Catholic cup. It was really surreal to be out there in front of all of the fans,” said Sabrina S., a grade twelve student on the team. Mr. Kittl, one of the coaches of the team also said, “We told the girls in the dressing room “you’re part of history today being the first girls’ team to participate in the Catholic Cup.” It’s an honour for all of us today.”
The girls played a good game, showing how far they had improved this season. The Lasers were defeated by the Cardinals in a close final score of 1-2, despite a great goal by #19, Camryn P.

Just as the excitement was settling, the boys’ hockey team skated onto the rink and brought it right back up again! The boys were extremely successful in their game against Brennan, and every player gave it their all. The Lasers played a tremendous game that led to a 3-0 victory, and a three year winning streak!
The first goal was scored within 2 minutes of the game, which prompted a wave of cheers from the Laser Nation. Then, as the second period was about to finish, another flawless point was earned. Finally, the winning goal was scored in the final period. Congratulations goes out to #88, Brayden M., #97, Michael P., and #77, Jacob P., for making these shots. After each goal, it seemed the Lasers in the audience got louder and more energetic, as many cheers and original chants were heard. Coach Mr. Sokolowski, had this to say; “[It was] great. The boys played as well as they could. They did what we told them to do. They played with heart, just like we always tell them to do: “Play the best you can and go, go, go; never stop”.
Overall, 2017’s Catholic Cup was a perfect way to start Christmas Break.
Awesome job Lasers!
