On Tuesday, November 26, St. Joe’s continued its yearly tradition of participating in the Reel Canada Film Festival. Students from Ms. McGuire’s period 1 English class and Mme. Lage’s period 4 French class headed to SilverCity Windsor Cinemas where they watched a Canadian-made movie and several short films.
In the morning, the Lasers watched The Grizzlies and in the afternoon, they watched three short films.
“The movie really touched me and it taught me a lot of things. It showed us the hidden truth of what life is like on reserves. It also made me wonder what the government is doing to help the First Nations and Inuit people,” said Michelle Y., a student from Ms. McGuire’s class.
The students were also very fortunate to have a live question and answer session with Aletha Arnaq-Baril and Stacy Aglok MacDonald, the producers of the movie, over Skype.
Ms. McGuire said, “I feel it’s a great experience because it awakens us and educated us on the very real and painful indigenous stories. It’s an important movie for all Canadians to see. It was a beautiful, inspiring and empowering movie.”
The film festival is a great experience for students to see Canadian films featuring Canadian people. Make sure to catch a REEL CANADA film next year!
