On Friday, December 20th, St. Joseph’s and Brennan students met at the WFCU Centre for the annual Father Zakoor hockey game, also known as the Catholic Cup.
The excitement had been building throughout the day, and enthusiasm was high throughout both the girls and boys matches.
The girls were the first on the ice to play in the third female Catholic Cup game ever. The Lasers made sure to show their support for their players. Cheers were heard loud and clear by everyone in the arena. The lead was fought over for most of the game. In the end, the three goals by Samantha S., Lauryn M., and Jada M. fell just two points short of securing the win. Nevertheless, the girls played a great game that demonstrated the strength and perseverance of the team. “Overall we went out there and tried our best, unfortunately we didn’t get the results we were hoping for. But just even being able to play in the third girl’s Catholic Cup game is something we won’t forget,” said team member Olivia H.

After a short intermission, the boy’s game began. As the Lasers and Cardinals entered the ice, both sides of the stadium were filled with an immense amount of school pride. Cheers erupted, banners and posters were displayed and the famous St. Joe’s chants began. The Laser boys starting off strong, gained the advantage by a 2-1 lead near the start of the game. Despite a great effort by St. Joe’s, Brennan reclaimed the lead in the second period and did not let it go, ending the game with a final score of 4 (Brennan) to 2 (St. Joseph’s). The two goals scored on the Lasers’ side were by Jaquan S. and Daniel R. “The boys kept their heads held high, but it didn’t turn out the way we wanted to. It was an experience that I will never forget. It was an honour to be a part of the father Zakoor Cup for for four years and winning three out of four, I will keep these memories with me forever,” said team captain Michael F.
Coaches of the team felt that their respective players played to the best of their ability this Catholic Cup, taking all that they had learned and perfected in practice, and applying it to the ice. “It was a close game the whole way. The team was pretty upset because they really wanted to win for themselves and for St. Joes,” said the girl’s coach Mr. Kittl.

Overall, this Catholic Cup may not have resulted in a Laser victory as was expected, but it was definitely a fun experience nonetheless. It also represented everything that makes Lasers who they are; their incredible school spirit. “The day and experience was still really fun even though we lost” explained Lea T., one of the many blue and yellow-clad spectators that filled the WFCU Centre.
A big congratulations to the girl’s and boy’s teams for playing two outstanding games of hockey, and to all of the teachers, staff and students who attended the event! Make sure to mark your calendars for next year’s Catholic Cup!
