Canada's 150th Birthday Talent Show for Terry Fox

On Monday, September 25, 2017, St. Joseph's High School held a celebratory talent show for Canada’s 150th birthday to raise money for our Terry Fox fundraiser.

“The efforts of St. Joe’s students was shown as they shared their talents with our school community to raise money for a very worthy cause,” shared a teacher from the Dramatic Arts department, Ms. Mailloux. With the help of her grade 11/12 Drama class and the Tech Team, the event became a great success. The show was given the title “Canada’s Got Talent,”and it included 16 wonderful and extremely talented acts.

The show took place on the stage in the cafeteria for the entirety of Period 4. The opening was “O Canada,” sung by Christina A, a Grade 10 student here at St Joseph's. At the end of the show, she said, “It had a cheerful crowd and it was a beautiful show that I was honoured to be a part of!”

The diversity of the acts was amazing. There were instruments, dance, singing and Canadian/ Aboriginal cultural movement pieces. The Indigenous presentations were performed by Ms. Mailloux’s Drama class, one being titled “The Creation Story,” explaining how our world was formed in that legend. Another was the story of an Aboriginal girl who was taken to a residential school and was mistreated and forced to change entitled “Residential school.” Just one of the many talented acts, Andrew S., in Grade 10, played an acoustic version of “Despacito” on his guitar. All he had to say was: “The performances were lit.”

“We’ve been working hard, and the prep was stressful, but in the end, it was well worth it,” quoted Lucas Y., a Grade 11 student from Ms. Mailloux’s Drama class. Yes, the event was stressful to prepare for but the product was beautiful.

We have to give our thanks to the Drama Department, the Tech Team, Mr. Labute and the other performers for the opportunity to hold this awesome charity event. It was truly a success and we hope there will be many more in our future for other charitable causes such as this one. We definitely showed our proud Laser spirit.
