A Canadian Celebration, Eh?

Monday was a spectacular day for all of the Laser Nation! It was the kickoff for our week-long Canada 150 celebration. The school day was filled with lots of fun activities that screamed Canadian pride, including a schoolwide Kahoot game and a talent show! It was a great time for everyone involved, both students and staff.

The festivities began right away, with 2 activities being held during the beginning of period one. To start off our party for Canada, every class tuned to play everyone’s favourite game, Kahoot! Students were really excited when they heard this.

“It’s cool how we are playing together.” said Grade 9 student Ashley D. when asked about her thoughts on the game. As the game went on, it was easy to see that this was going to be a good week.

Everyone was getting involved and enthusiasm was high. When asked how his time was, Nick P. of Mrs Palumbo's class said “I’m having a lot of fun and it’s fun to learn!” Although it seemed to be all fun and games, this was still a contest and while all the classes wanted the glory, the class that came out on top were Mrs Greig’s Grade 9s. I went to the room and the students were very happy to have won. According to the students and teacher, they just guessed for most of the game! They must have been very lucky. From what I heard, all the students worked with each other as a class, and ultimately, that worked out in their favour. To quote Mrs Greig, “When you work as a team, you get results.” Great way to work! Along with the Kahoot, there was also a Canada based inference challenge! The three words are: Curling, Cold, and Inukshuk. What could these 3 words possibly have in common? It’s up to the classes to find that out and win the first inference challenge of the year!

As first period ended and the day went on, the great times continued. As another part of Canada 150 week, the students of St Joseph's were shown 4 movie trailers, that were a part of the Reel Canadian Film Festival. This film festival has been celebrating Canada films and filmmakers since 2005 and it never fails to show us the best of Hollywood North! The 4 movies in particular that will be shown at the school are Breakaway and The Whale for the juniors (grades 9 and 10) and Remember and The F Word for the seniors (grades 11 and 12). I got the reactions of the trailers from some Grade 9 students in Mrs Altenhoff’s science class. “Breakaway seems funny and intriguing.” said Taylor C. Daniel Z. said, “I would see Remember for sure.” As for the other two trailers, several students thought that The Whale seemed like a informative movie and that The F Word looked very funny. Good reactions all around!

Along with the movies, we also will Skype with the producer and star of Breakaway, Vinay Virmani, and the director of Remember, Atom Egoyan! All of these film related events will be happening on Wednesday!

Now, at the end of the school day, during 4th period, was the moment everyone had been waiting for… the Canada’s got Talent Show! The whole student body gathered in the cafetorium to watch their fellow Lasers show off their talents, and let me just say, this school has a LOT of it. There were amazing singers, dancers, poets, and actors who went up on stage, and the audience loved every second of it. One act I would like to point out is Mr Morson and Mr Labute’s duet to “If I Had A Million Dollars.” It was great to see the staff getting involved and it was really nice to see Mr Morson and even our principal in a brand new light. The talent show was a great time for all!

That was the end of the activities for Monday, but coming up in the week, there are a lot more fun events planned. Tuesday has two presentations about Indigenous Roots and French Culture in store, Wednesday is host to our film festival screenings, Thursday is chock full of activities, like a citizenship court, prayer service, a time capsule, and more. Finally, on Friday, is our Terry Fox walk around Forest Glade, accompanied by birthday activities and a road hockey tournament! It’s going to be an adventurous and exciting week here at St Joseph's, and it’s all in celebration of our great country, Canada.
