As the new school year began, many students, old and new, arrived at St Joe’s. Among these were tons of new high school students who had just arrived from grade school and moved on as freshmen! This series of articles will highlight Grade 9 students who are standing out in their new surroundings, and who definitely display the 3 R’s of the school.
Meet Gavin Pawluk, a new Laser this year and a Student Council representative. When asked how he was adjusting to a new schedule, he had a pretty positive response. Gavin thinks that he is adjusting pretty well to high school, but that there is a lot more people than his old school, which was pretty small. He attended L.A Demarais Catholic School, and Gavin went there for his whole grade school career. He has also lived in Windsor for his whole life.
Gavin has a lot of achievements under his belt, both academically and athletically. To name a couple, he is very proud of being named player of the year for his local hockey team. On the academic side, he was lucky enough to be awarded the academic student of the year at his graduation. Talk about a way to top off that night. Anyways, as anyone can conclude, Gavin knows how to work hard and achieve what he wants.
Bordering off of that, those qualities are what made Gavin want to run for student council. When asked why he wanted to try and get elected, his answer really showed his passion for the students. “I joined Student Council so I could get involved inside school. Also, I would like to change the school in effective ways and want to help to get many people involved throughout the school community.” Gavin also said that he would like to listen to the students’ input, and create a safe and welcoming place and environment. “I want to make the school better as a community overall.” Looks like there are high hopes for this school year!
High school doesn’t last forever, and everyone will have a new aspiration and career they want to pursue. For Gavin, this inspiration is in the medical field. He would like to become a doctor in the future in order to aid and make others’ lives better. “I see myself becoming a doctor because I want to make a difference in the world.” Well, saving lives everyday seems like a good way to do just that.
