Emily Gauthier: Lending a Hand One "Step" At a Time

Armed with a positive outlook and attitude, Emily Gauthier is a Grade 9 student at St Joseph's who aspires to make changes in people’s lives. Prior to joining the Laser family, she originally attended W.J. Langlois Elementary School, from kindergarten up until the sixth grade, at which point she transferred to the - at the time - newly built Corpus Christi, and went there for her last two years of grade school. A native of Windsor, Emily has become familiar with the secondary school setting very easily throughout these past two months, to which she credits her older siblings, who are actually past graduates of St. Joes', for helping her with her success.

Dance and music have always been a passion of Emily's ever since she can remember. For her, dance can fix any problem, and is able to portray one’s emotions, thoughts, and feelings through simply

movement. These are the personal benefits that make her enjoy the form of art as much as she does.

As well, Emily sees dancing as a form of storytelling. Through actions and choreography, anyone can create stories and say things that need to be said, without any words. As if that all wasn’t enough, Emily has obtained good experience creating her own dances, and even heading an entire dance troupe, as last year, she was honoured with being her school’s dance team captain, which is something she will never forget.

Besides progressing in the arts, Emily has a lot of other hopes and plans for this school year. She would really like to maintain high marks overall in her classes, to make sure that many doors and opportunities are open for her later in life. As well, Emily says that a big part of high school for her is to try and always keep an open mind, so that she can take part in new and exciting experiences and activities, and also meet new people and make lifelong friends.

Following in her sister’s footsteps, Emily is excited to benefit others in the future. In her future, she would like to continue academically, with her dream being to attend a nice college, and to get a job that deals with helping children who suffer from mental disabilities. She is already getting a head start, with her involvement in the Best Buddies club at school. Her desire to help mirrors Emily’s older sister's career. In the end, however, according to Emily, she wants to be proud of herself, no matter what her life holds. “I just want to stay happy with myself and think positively, no matter what gets in my way.” With all the exciting but intimidating challenges that arrive with being new students, that is something for everyone to think about.
