The St. Joe’s girls volleyball team kicked off their season this past Tuesday with a win for both the juniors and seniors against the Massey Mustangs. The juniors had a solid game, finishing with a final score of 2-1. The senior Lasers played three very strong games, winning all three.

The Lasers hit the court again on Thursday at Riverside Secondary School against the Riverside Rebels. They battled in back-and-forth games but both St. Joe’s teams were unable to pull ahead to win.

The senior girls had a solid start to their game, showing some great passing skills and amazing hits. The girls couldn’t quite keep up the energy and fell short by five points in the first set, with a 20-25 loss. Despite a great effort by the Lasers, the next set yielded the same results, with a score of 14-25. During the last set, the seniors gave it their all and almost managed to catch up with the Rebels, but narrowly lost with a score of 22-25. “Riverside is a very tough team...but we put our best effort in. We just couldn’t pull it off,” said Mrs. Wasyluk, coach of the senior team.

The junior Lasers played a great first set, starting off with accurate passes and strong serves, winning 25-18. The next set was a nail-biter, with a 26-28 loss. The girls tried their best to come back strong for the third set, but simply lost their momentum and were defeated 19-25, resulting in a final score of 1-2 for the Lasers. “I think we’ve had pretty good start. [We had] some rough patches here and there depending on the set. We’ve got some great leadership on the team and I think that we can improve and move on towards a good standing for playoffs,” said Mr. Hind, the junior girls’ coach.

This past weekend, the senior girls participated in the Black and Gold Tournament that took place at General Amherst High School. “We came second in our pool; we were tied with Kingsville. We lost in the semi-finals after two really really tough games. They were hard fought with excellent play,” Mrs. Wasyluk commented.

Be sure to catch the next game this Tuesday against General Amherst in the Laser-dome!
