Black Panther Review: Breaking Boundaries On and Off Screen

Pulling in about $700,000,000 in two weeks, Black Panther has already broken several box office records. It has also had a large critical success, with a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. Most importantly, however, is that this movie has been loved by every person who has seen it, myself included! Because of this, and just in time for Black History Month, here is my review of Marvel’s Black Panther.

I will be the first to admit that I am not a die-hard fan of superhero movies, but that didn’t stop me from enjoying this film. Black Panther had amazing action sequences, great acting, and was just a well-done movie in general. I couldn’t wait for the movie to start and definitely did not want it to end.

Something I noticed that I particularly remembered was the breathtaking visuals in this movie. From the technologically advanced world of Wakanda, to a lit-up, downtown South Korean street, all the colours on screen popped out on their own. This not only made for stunning scenes, but also kept me intrigued throughout the film. I will be surprised if they are not recognized.

Although the visual aspects of the movie looked great, they served only as the background to some unbelievable acting. Chadwick Boseman and Michael B. Jordan, who play Black Panther and Killmonger, had great chemistry as hero and villain, and gave top-notch performances on both ends. As for the supporting characters, each actor or actress contributed some extra “wow factor” to the film, and enhanced it in some way, and are sure to become fan favourites. This goes for the whole cast, as through the actors’ delivery, I felt even more immersed in the movie.

On a more serious side of things, it is very fitting that Black Panther was released in the month of February, which is also Black History Month. This film greatly demonstrated the immense talent of people of colour in the filmmaking industry, and was very influential as well, all shown by the large praise from this community. This movie has broken the record for the highest box-office opening of all time for the month of February, and is also the highest grossing film for a black director, in this case; Ryan Coogler. Black Panther, which featured a mostly African American cast, has become inspiring to many people of colour, as they feel represented on the screen, and are proud of the film’s success.

In the end, I would recommend Black Panther to anyone without a doubt, and if you are looking to see a movie this weekend, this should definitely be the one.
