St Joseph's Catholic High School has a reputation for having the most units of blood donated by a high school in Canada. On March 2, with student, staff, and parent donors, we were able to be successful yet again, with 62 units of blood as the final count!

Why donate blood?

Blood is the most precious gift that anyone can give to another person. It is basically the gift of life. Those who make a decision to donate their blood can save a life, or even several lives.

Where does the blood go?

Blood transfusion is needed for:

- women with complications of pregnancy, before, during or after childbirth;

- children with severe anaemia often resulting from malaria or malnutrition;

- people with severe trauma following natural disasters; and

- many complex medical and surgical procedures and cancer patients.

Fun facts - Canadian Blood Services

  • Every person’s body contains about 5 Litres of blood

  • There are approximately 450 ml of blood in one unit collected

  • About 100,000 new donors are needed every year to meet demand

  • Canadians are some of the most loyal donors in the world, donating more than two times per year on average!!!

  • It can take up to 50 units of blood to save a single car crash victim

  • It can take eight units a week to help someone battling leukemia

  • All it takes is one donation to Give Life

All in all, when you donate blood, you’re using your power to Give Life. It’s that simple. Your donation can treat cancer patients, bring a car crash victim through surgery, even help a transplant patient’s new heart beat for the first time. Now that’s truly powerful.

It is important to spread the word to give life, and engage the community to donate.

This was our last blood drive of the year--stay tuned next year and consider giving life through a donation!
