Wednesday, April 18th was a special day at St Joseph's High School, when students were given the amazing opportunity to be part of National Canadian Film Day. St Joseph’s joined hundreds of schools across the country to screen Canadian-made movies. The school was also able to participate in an interactive livestream, where they had the chance to have their own questions answered by Canadian filmmakers.

The whole experience was a success, as well as a fun time for everyone involved. The film that was screened in the cafetorium, “The Grand Seduction,” was a feel good, visually stunning, and entertaining movie. It also gave an interesting look at Canada from another perspective, as the film took place in Newfoundland. The reaction from the audience was extremely positive.

During period 3, Reel Canada hosted a live event, where students from all over Canada could ask questions about anything related to film. Lasers enjoyed listening to all the insightful questions that were asked, as well as the detailed answers. It was a great chance to learn more about the industry, and to gain insight into the world of Canadian movies.

Overall, this was another perfect film event held at St Joseph's, and the school hopes that it will not be the last!

The Canadian Film Day debuted many talented people in the performance industry. This set the stage for St Joseph’s own Coffee House during fourth period. Students basked in the spotlight through heartfelt poetry, music and dance.

The students of St Joseph’s never miss an opportunity to debut their talent to the rest of our school. The Coffee House had an amazing lineup of acts that captured the attention of half the student body.

Keagan Yap, Kobe Bekoe, Sukie Chaggar and Grace Santin opened the show with three back to back poems that captivated the audience. Diana Aldea recited a slam poem she wrote herself touching on the current state of women in society. Her poem brought inspiration to all the young women with big dreams at the school. Another slam poem that was performed by Maral and Alina also brought all girls a sense of empowerment as the spoke powerfully on stage. Taylor McQueen performed the poem Barbara. The French poem was recited beautifully.

Mr. Robillard, one of St Joseph’s own teachers, gave the students a taste of his newly published book, “Ask The River” by reading two of his poems from the piece. Mr. Barron, another teacher at St Joseph’s, recited one of Mr. Robillard’s poems aloud from his collection. The Principal of St Joseph’s, Mr. Labute, took the stage to perform a duet with grade ten student Andrew Seguin. The two grabbed their guitars and played Drake's hit song “God’s Plan.”

Two grade 11 students did a comedic rendition of the story Macbeth. Taking the place of the witches in the classic. Nicholas Janiak and Isaac Rathe had the audience filled with giggles as they cracked jokes in their witches costumes. Two lovely grade ten students, Stephanie and Clementine presented a strong point on the stance of LGBTQ people in today’s society. They recited a poem that urged acceptance and love for young people who want to express themselves and their sexuality freely.

Melody Turner, is a talented singer at St Joseph’s. Her soft but powerful voice continues to stun the audience every time she goes on stage. She sang a glowing rendition of Ed Sheeran's “Lego House”.

The St Joseph’s Coffee House finale was one to remember. Rose and Jessica are two extremely talented dancers who brought their vibrant style of dance to our cafetorium stage and brought home the show, which ultimately concluded the 2018 St Joseph’s Coffee House. The Coffee House raised a whopping $361.65 which will go towards St Joseph’s Art and English department poetry resources in the future.

This wasn’t an average Wednesday for the students or teachers of St Joseph’s High School. Thanks to their support, the school had an amazing day participating in all the true talent Canadian Performers have to offer.
