Awareness inspires change, while action makes change a reality. This is the perspective that our newest club, the Upcycled Climate Club led by Mme Tomaselli, has taken in directing its activities and planning its future initiatives. Today, the global community is facing an environmental crisis and the good news is, every one of us can do our part in combating it.
Club founder, Anika Yap, is optimistic about the change we can make in our school community. Since watching the acclaimed documentary, Blue Planet, in Grade 3, she has been determined to do her fair share. Upon starting Grade 9, she wanted to join forces with like-minded students to put her passion to work and learn new ways of engaging a collective. This is how the Upcycled Climate Club came to be.
The Battery Drive runs until Friday, March 13th, and aims to reduce the number of batteries and electronics that end up in landfills.
Starting with the Battery Drive, the Upcycled Climate Club wants to offer STJ students the opportunity to do their part. Every day at lunch until March 13th, the club will set up outside the guidance office to collect used batteries and small electronics. These items contain environmental hazards which, when improperly disposed of, can pose a grave threat to people and animals alike.
Moving forward, Upcycled would like to hear your ideas. "As a club, new ideas power us forward and we work as a team to make those ideas happen," Yap said excitedly. As well, she invites anyone and everyone who wants to leave their mark in this climate battle or who would like to get involved at school, to join the Upcycled Climate Club. Meetings are Wednesdays at lunch in Rm. 201 (Mme Tomaselli's room) and run for approximately fifteen minutes.
For this generation, the time is now: will you sit back and watch others strive or will you step in to contribute your much-needed efforts? The Upcycled Climate Club will be waiting for your call.
