On Thursday, October 17th, celebrations for St. Joe’s 30th anniversary continued at the WFCU Centre in the form of a friendly hockey game between alumni and current Lasers. The game was one of the major events organized to celebrate St. Joseph’s 30th anniversary.

Students headed to the WFCU Centre after a spirited rally featuring guest speaker Mr. Mike Chalut, and a dance number performed by Mrs. Chiandussi’s dance classes. To mark the beginning of the game, Christina A., a grade twelve student, sang “O Canada”. Her outstanding rendition of the national anthem had everyone in the crowd cheering well before she had finished. Soon after, the players of both teams were introduced, and the game began.

Despite the shortened game, it was filled with amazing plays and goals. In the first half, the alumni team swiftly scored 3 goals, which were soon matched by the current Lasers. As the fast paced game progressed, Mr. Younan scored a tremendous hat trick, and Gabe P. made some outstanding goals. The current Lasers continued to play hard and notable players included: Mr. Laporte with his keen passes, Hailey C. and her solid plays, and Mr. Soks with great goalie defense.

The alumni team won 10-7 but being comprised of former Lasers, it was still great to see many past and present students out there and how strong and close St. Joe’s Lasers are as a community. “It was a great opportunity and an even better experience. I was extremely impressed with the turnout, and even though we lost, it made me proud to be a Laser!” says Jada M., a grade ten student who played on the current Laser team.

During the first intermission, Laser figure skaters took to the ice to show spectators what else could be done on an ice rink. The skaters included current students Alexandria M., Anna K., and Katherine K., as well as alumni Vanessa B., Alessia B., and Krista K. They performed a group number as well as various individual routines to a mix of songs from the 90s. Six hockey players, including Mr. Kittl and Mr. Strong, were then invited on the ice to participate in a relay race against the figure skaters.

A big thank you goes to everyone who made this event possible and to those who came to watch. Way to Go Lasers!
